Disabled Wet Room Installation | Wakefield | More Ability
Published: 12 February 2026
Background
Following a life-changing accident, our 27-year-old client was left paralysed from the chest down. Her existing bathroom, which consisted of a WC, pedestal basin and bath with an overhead shower, was no longer suitable for her needs. What had once been a standard family bathroom had become restrictive, difficult to navigate and potentially unsafe.
Bathing independently was increasingly challenging, and the layout simply did not allow for wheelchair access or safe transfers. However, while accessibility was the priority, our client was very clear that she did not want a bathroom that felt clinical or institutional. At 27, she wanted a modern, stylish space that reflected her personality while supporting her long-term mobility needs.
Trusting More Ability to design and install a fully accessible disabled wet room our aim was to provide safety, independence and confidence without compromising on aesthetics.
Disabled Wet Room Design
Adaptation Designer Nigel led the project, taking time to fully understand both the practical requirements and the desired look and feel of the space. The room was completely stripped back and reconfigured to create an open-plan layout that would allow comfortable wheelchair manoeuvrability throughout. By removing the bath and opening up the floor area, the space was transformed into a true level-access wet room designed for ease of movement now and in the future.
The wet room was fully tiled in large-format Madagascar Grey tiles, carefully combining smooth and textured finishes to introduce subtle contrast. This pairing allowed the showering zone to feel clearly defined while maintaining a cohesive, contemporary appearance.

A purpose-built shower bench was designed and constructed to provide secure seating while elevating the overall finish of the room. Topped with bespoke Corian, the bench creates a streamlined, high-end aesthetic that feels intentional rather than adapted. The anthracite anti-slip vinyl flooring complements the tiled walls and ensures confidence underfoot, while an anthracite towel radiator introduces warmth and visual balance within the space.

Accessibility features were thoughtfully integrated throughout the design. A comfort height WC was installed to ease transfers, and a wall-hung basin was chosen to allow for seated use and improved wheelchair access beneath. Grab bars were carefully positioned to provide support without overwhelming the design, and a modern shower mixer with rainfall head and separate controls ensures ease of use. All fixtures and fittings were updated in polished chrome to maintain a clean, contemporary finish.

New LED lighting and upgraded ventilation were also installed to ensure the room feels bright, fresh and comfortable every day. The result is a disabled wet room that feels modern, calm and welcoming rather than clinical.

Disabled Wet Room Installation
Once the design was finalised, Multi-Skilled Fitter Chris carried out the full installation. The project required careful preparation to construct the wet room floor correctly and ensure a seamless, watertight finish. The anti-slip vinyl flooring was laid with such precision that it appears almost painted on, delivering both practicality and visual simplicity.
Chris’ attention to detail was evident throughout, particularly in the alignment of the large-format tiles, which were installed with millimetre-perfect accuracy. His pride in workmanship ensured that every element of the bathroom met the highest standards. When additional storage and wall fittings arrived later than expected, he returned on his day off to complete the finishing touches, demonstrating the commitment and care that define our values and our team.
This project is a clear example of our Full Accessible Bathroom Design and Fit Service in action, with every stage managed professionally from initial concept through to final completion.
The Finished Disabled Wet Room
The completed disabled wet room in Wakefield is spacious, elegant and fully functional. The level-access shower area allows safe, confident bathing, while the bespoke shower bench and thoughtfully positioned support rails provide reassurance without dominating the space.
The coordinated palette of Madagascar Grey tiles, anthracite flooring and polished chrome fixtures creates a sophisticated, contemporary bathroom that reflects the client’s age and style. Most importantly, it restores independence and eliminates the risks previously associated with showering.

Five Star Review
After completion, our client shared a heartfelt five-star review on Trustpilot, describing her experience. She praised Nigel for going above and beyond during the planning stage, spending hours advising on colours and suitable products to ensure the bathroom would be modern rather than clinical. She described Chris as a perfectionist whose tiling was “absolutely perfect, to the millimetre,” and highlighted his willingness to return on his day off to install additional items.
Her review concluded by saying she can now shower without the dangers she once faced and that she would recommend More Ability to anyone. Feedback like this reflects our values and the strength of our team, whose skill, care and professionalism set us apart, and the reasons why our clients choose us.
