Accessible Wet Floor Shower | Ilkley | More Ability

Published: 30 April 2025

Background

Our clients—a mother and daughter—came to us following a recommendation from a friend who had previously had work done by our team. With the mother planning a move from Whitby to a retirement village in Ilkley, they visited our Harrogate Showroom together to explore ideas and discuss possibilities.

The existing en-suite was dark and confined, with no natural light. The raised floor also posed a trip hazard, worsened by the existing slippery tiled surface. The goal was to transform the room it into a bright, safe, and accessible space with thoughtful, stylish design features that balanced safety and aesthetics.

Accessible Bathroom Design

To address the spatial and safety concerns, Senior Designer Angela proposed combining the existing en-suite and main bathroom. Removing the dividing wall created a larger, more open-plan area that allowed for a better layout and improved light distribution.

The new design featured an accessible wet floor shower, eliminating trip hazards and providing seamless entry due to its level access design. A glass flipper screen was installed to help contain water while maintaining an open and airy feel. The entire floor area was fitted with anti-slip vinyl flooring, chosen for its safety and ease of maintenance—ideal for reducing the risk of falls.

A run of contrasting dark wood fitted furniture was incorporated to create a modern look, finished with a marble-effect surface. The WC and basin were fully integrated and concealed, providing a streamlined appearance and improving usability.

Accessible Bathroom Finishing Touches

Emphasising both functionality and aesthetics, the room was fully tiled in a neutral, textured beige, adding warmth and a sense of calm. A large mirror was strategically positioned to reflect light around the room, enhancing brightness and creating the illusion of added space—essential in an internal room with no windows.

Chrome fixtures and fittings were selected for their clean, contemporary feel, and a large towel radiator in a complementary beige finish provided both warmth and style.

Within the shower area, practical support features were seamlessly integrated, including a fold-away seat and a chrome wavy grab bar—chosen to offer support with a stylish, non-institutional appearance.

Accessible Bathroom Installation

The installation was carried out with exceptional attention to detail by Multi-Skilled Fitter Paul, overseen by Installation Surveyor Joe. Every stage was fully project managed to ensure the design was realized to the highest standard and tailored to the user's individual needs.

Client Review

Delighted with the project the clients left the following 5-Star Trustpilot Review:

“Excellent professional service from start to finish. Very impressed with the bathroom fit out by Paul and Ryan, their attention to detail ensured we have a superb new bathroom. They were helpful throughout and made sure we were happy with their progress on a daily basis. I can thoroughly recommend their service.”
