An existing bathroom in Mirfield was completely transformed into a purpose-designed mobility level access shower room, creating a safer, more practical and accessible bathing solution designed around the customer’s needs. The project was surveyed by Adaptation Surveyor Kenny and installed by Multi-Skilled Fitter Garry.

Background

Looking for a safer and more suitable bathing solution, the customer contacted More Ability to discuss adapting their existing bathroom.

Adaptation Surveyor Kenny visited the property to assess the existing space and discuss the customer’s individual wants, needs and requirements. Following the consultation, Kenny proposed a complete bathroom to level access shower conversion, creating a purpose-designed showering environment that would provide greater accessibility and support.

The proposed adaptation would involve a complete refurbishment of the existing bathroom, incorporating a level access shower alongside supportive seating, grab rails and other carefully considered features to make everyday bathing safer and easier.

Importantly, the design also considered how the bathroom could continue to support the customer should their needs change in the future.

Mobility Level Access Shower Design

Central to the new bathroom design was a spacious level access shower, providing a more accessible bathing solution and removing the need to negotiate the raised threshold associated with a conventional shower tray.

A supportive shower seat was incorporated to provide the option of seated showering, with grab rails positioned within the showering area to provide additional support when required.

Half-height shower doors were also incorporated around the showering area. As well as helping to contain water, the arrangement allows easier access should assistance with showering be required, either now or as the customer’s needs change in the future.

The showering area was completed with an electric shower and adjustable shower head, providing a straightforward and practical solution for everyday use.

Beyond the showering area, replacement sanitaryware was incorporated as part of the complete bathroom refurbishment, creating a practical layout designed to make the best use of the available space.

The room was finished with wall panelling, providing a clean and easy-to-maintain alternative to traditional wall finishes. A neutral palette keeps the overall appearance light and simple while ensuring the practical accessibility features remain integral to the room.

Slip-resistant flooring was selected to provide improved grip underfoot throughout the bathroom, helping to reduce the risk of slips in an environment where the floor can regularly become wet.

For the flooring, the customer selected an Otter finish, introducing a subtle contrast against the lighter wall finishes and sanitaryware. The choice was confirmed as part of the customer’s final finishing selections.

Together, the level access shower, seating, support features and practical finishes create a bathroom designed not only around the customer’s current requirements, but with the flexibility to continue supporting them in the future.

Installation

Once the design and specification had been agreed, Multi-Skilled Fitter Garry completed the bathroom transformation following the adaptation survey carried out by Kenny.

The project involved a complete bathroom to level access shower conversion, with the existing bathroom stripped out and the space prepared for the new accessible arrangement.

The installation incorporated the necessary preparation, and alteration works before the new level access showering area, sanitaryware and selected finishes could be fitted.

The showering area was completed with the supportive shower seat, grab rails and half-height shower doors, bringing together the individual accessibility features specified as part of the design.

The wider bathroom was then completed with the replacement sanitaryware, wall finishes and slip-resistant flooring to create a fully integrated mobility bathroom.

Electrical works were also carried out as part of the project, with the customer later specifically praising the professionalism and efficiency of the electricians involved alongside Garry’s work throughout the installation.

The Finished Project

The completed bathroom has transformed the existing space into a safer, more practical and considerably more accessible shower room designed around the customer’s individual requirements.

At the heart of the adaptation, the level access shower provides easier access to the showering area, while the supportive shower seat offers the option of bathing from a seated position.

Carefully positioned grab rails provide additional support where required, while the half-height shower doors help contain water and provide flexibility should assisted showering be needed, either now or in the future.

The slip-resistant flooring provides improved grip underfoot across the bathroom, while the wall panelling creates a practical, easy-to-maintain finish suited to the demands of an accessible bathing space.

Importantly, the completed adaptation considers both present and future needs. Rather than focusing solely on the customer’s requirements today, the combination of level access showering, seating, support features and half-height doors provides greater flexibility should additional assistance become necessary.

The result is a purpose-designed mobility bathroom that provides a safer and easier-to-use showering environment while giving the customer greater confidence that the space can continue to support their needs in the years ahead.
